01-The Story

Samuel Oakley Crawford

Samuel Oakley Crawford is a villain and an anti-hero with a story that needs to be told. At every turn, this man from New York state transforms himself into more fascinating characters. At least, 38 identities fleece America, Australia, and New Zealand. Not only does he steal money, he takes with him the hearts of many a fair maiden.

Newspapers shout that Oakley has as many as twenty-four wives, but research suggests that the number is slightly over a dozen.

Oakley’s near photographic memory allows him to recite legal cases spontaneously in both trials as well as political speeches. While delivering sermons, he extemporaneously interjects passages from literature. When name dropping, he has an arsenal filled with hundreds of minor details about the men he is discussing. This arrow in Oakley’s quiver grants him heightened credibility. Oakley carries the gift of the Blarney stone with his mesmerizing power of speech.

These talents bring Oakley consideration as an ambassador, a United States Senator, and a United States Congressman.

The adventure does not stop there. In New Zealand, under the name Arthur Worthington, this “non” prophet establishes a cult so large that the Christian churches stutter and beg his departure.

This is a story of a man that could have changed the world, but he had other plans.

The prophet

The adventure does not stop there. In New Zealand, under the name Arthur Worthington, this “non” prophet establishes a cult so large that the Christian churches stutter and beg his departure.

This is a story of a man that could have changed the world, but he had other plans.

1905, Historic Magazine and Notes and Queries

Arthur Bentley Worthington, an American gentleman, now in Australia, is regarded by many as a Divine Messenger. He is a highly educated man, and an eloquent orator, He established a sect called “The Students of Truth.” He built a magnificent temple in New Zealand. He has published several very learned volumes and pamphlets, and also a periodical. He has lectured to large audiences in Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide. His followers are nearly all of the intelligent class.1

“It is like one sitting upon the deck of a ship, watching the fog as it lifts, until the outline of the ship is disclosed and unveiled, and then the immediate surface of the water surrounding the ship is discovered, and as the fog lifts, and lifts, and lifts, the visible which it discloses constantly announces the invisible beyond it.
And so it is with life; we are constantly standing upon some shoreless sea, beyond which stretches the unknown and the invisible. We are like explorers entering a new country; unlike the explorers, however, we are compelled to go on, we are compelled to examine, we are compelled to search.”
